Trade Analysis: Far East Westbound
Situation
Peak season is still in full swing for this trade, particularly for the Asia–North Europe route, where a lack of sailings and insufficient amount of vessels have caused delays. This has clearly pushed rates up.
The Mediterranean area has already seen a decline in volumes, which is reflected in falling indices and rates since mid-July.
Obstacles
Space issues on the trade lane to North Europe will not be completely resolved in August, with problems expected to continue until the end of the month. One reason is the ongoing typhoon season in Asia, which lasts until the end of October and can cause delays when ports are impacted by bad weather.
Outlook
Although demand is expected to slow down in August, limited space availability will prevent rates from dropping significantly during the first half of the month. Volumes are expected to pick up again by late August and early September, driven by pre-Christmas demand in Europe and preparations for the Golden Week holidays in Asia at the beginning of October.
