Trade Analysis: Transatlantic Westbound
Situation
The originally announced “Peak Season Surcharge” (PSS) was postponed until April 1, but was eventually cancelled altogether. The capacity situation is improving for all US ports. Some shipping lines have started to look for more volumes on the Transatlantic Westbound (TAWB) trade for defined destination ports.
Obstacles
The lack of clarity on tariffs and related actions by the US government creates an unstable environment.
Outlook
As the PSS implementation has been unsuccessful and ocean rates have been extended, the market conditions on the TAWB trade will remain more or less stable in April. The forthcoming alliance restructuring will intensify price competition as carriers fight for market share.
