At the beginning of 2025 the reefer market continues to face a tense situation in terms of capacities and fluid rates due to various reasons like strikes, port congestions, geopolitical tensions, and challenging weather conditions.
The restructuring of shipping alliances and the transition to new alliances is causing short-term schedule reliability issues, which also influences reefer traffic. The demand for Reefer containers remains strong, driven by key commodities as fruits, meat and fish, diary product and pharmaceuticals.
Reefer freight rates are expected to be stable in Q1 on almost all trades. Only LATAM export rates will increase, mostly driven by peak fruit season and capacity issues.
High demand for reefer containers in Q1 is expected especially in South America and South Africa, where there is peak season for citrus fruits, berries, avocados and grapes.
Disruptions in the Red Sea are causing longer transit times, which have a major impact on reefer equipment availability. Forecasting is essential as there is always the possibility of equipment shortages.
There are space constraints on several trade lanes, particularly Far East Westbound as well as North Europe to USA and Middle East.
