Current reefer market assessment for Q4/2024:

  • The reefer market is facing a tense situation in terms of capacities and rates due to various reasons like strikes, port congestions, geopolitical tensions, and challenging weather conditions.
  • Rates on the Far East Westbound trade lane declined in September and are expected to drop further in October, while Transatlantic rates are rising. Rates on the Oceania trade lane are also rapidly increasing due to capacity issues.
  • Disruptions in the Red Sea and low water in the Panama Canal are causing longer transit times, which has a major impact on reefer equipment availability. Forecasting is important as there is always the possibility of equipment shortages.
  • Oceania and India are currently facing equipment shortages.
  • There are space constraints on several trade lanes, particularly Far East Westbound as well as North Europe to USA and Middle East.
  • On the Far East Eastbound route, capacities are currently well balanced.
  • Direct end-to-end visibility of reefer ocean freight is becoming a standard for the world’s shipping containers. Reefer cargo should be monitored for temperature, ventilation, humidity, power and, ideally, position.
  • When it comes to sustainability, reefer ocean freight has a significantly lower carbon footprint than air freight.
