A key development in this context is the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), which will apply to the shipping sector starting from January 1, 2024. Ocean carriers have advised that any additional costs associated with the EU ETS will necessitate a surcharge on containers loaded on routes affected by this regulation.
