The global airfreight industry continues to face a variety of challenges, from looming trade conflicts to a cooling global economy. Uncertainty around the erratic US tariff policy continues to impact international airfreight.
- At the beginning of the year, the US administration imposed inconsistent global tariffs. Although it reached initial trade/tariff agreements with the EU and several other countries, this move has clearly impacted global trade and shipping.
- The current tariff exemption for China has been extended once again, but it remains unclear what will happen if no agreement is reached by the current deadline of November 10.
- The customs agreement with the EU has resulted in a general 15% tariff, with several exemptions and additional subsidiary agreements.
- As a direct result of US tariffs, global air cargo demand is expected to increase only marginally in 2025.
Current Status:
The Europe – Asia trade lane remains one of the stronger lanes with continued year-on-year growth. The Europe – North America trade lane also shows solid volume growth, though spot rates are under pressure in both markets.
Market pricing is mixed: Spot indexes show occasional rate upticks on specific trades, but overall rates are stable or slightly declining compared to 2024.
Tariff and regulatory developments in China and Hong Kong could alter commodity flows on the Asia – Europe trade. In addition, tariff disputes between USA and China have diverted capacities from Transpacific routes to other trade lanes.
Airlines are adjusting their networks, with some placing greater focus on Asia – Europe trade.
Short-Term Outlook (Next 6-12 Weeks)
- Europe → Asia: Steady demand supported by seasonal replenishment, with rates remaining low due to significant overcapacities
- Asia → Europe: Increasing volumes expected, with peak season pricing driven by growing e-commerce demand
- Europe → North America: Continued growth with stable demand, though seasonal peaks may tighten space

- Book time-sensitive shipments earlier to secure space
- Use a diverse procurement strategy
- Consider multi-modal options if beneficial
- Stay alert to hub disruptions and tariff changes
- Forward planning and flexibility remain key
